How To Maintain The Perfect Water
Chemistry
Total alkalinity
Alkalinity is the way you can tell if your water is neutralizing acidity. The alkalinity levels of your water are directly related to your water's pH; high levels of alkalinity will mean you will have higher PH levels in your pool water.
pH level
pH is the measurement of how acidic or basic substances are. PH scales between 0 and 14, and is neutral at 7.
Calcium hardness
Be aware of your water's calcium hardness chlorine, total dissolved solids and cyan-uric acid levels. Besides the alkaline and pH levels, these are also to be monitored. If you haven't already, learn what they are and how they benefit your water. Calcium hardness is the present amount of calcium in the water. Your water will become corrosive if the calcium levels are too low, potentially destroying the body of your pool.
Sanitizer
Chlorine or bromine is what is used to sanitize and disinfect your water.
Total dissolved solids are composed of inorganic salts (potassium, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonates, sodium, sulfates and chlorides ) and smaller amounts of other organic materials dissolved in the water.
Stabilizer
Cyan-uric acid is what protects the chlorine in the water from the sun's UV rays.
What to look for for?
Identify your water's total alkalinity, pH, chlorine, cyan-uric acid, total dissolved solids and calcium hardness levels. Here are some recommended levels
Chlorine: 1.0 - 2.0 ppm
pH: 7.2 - 7.8
Total alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 180 - 220 ppm
Total Dissolved Solids: below 5000 ppm
Cyan-uric Acid: 40 - 80 ppm
Test your water!
Know when to test for each water component. When testing your water, be aware of individual timelines for best functionality, and to ensure clean and healthy water. All individual elements (we will use pH as an example) has to be tested at a specific point. Although difficult for most people, some professionals advise daily testing. For proper functionality keep the following time-lines:
Chlorine ideally should be tested 1 X per week.
Total alkalinity should be tested once a week, and never less than once a month.
pH ideally should be tested 1 X per week.
Calcium hardness ideally should be tested 2 X a season.
Cyan-uric acid should be tested 1 X a season.
Total dissolved solids should be tested once a week, and never less than once a month. If you need a hand for anything chemistry related, Pristine Pools would love to help!
